GUESS WHAT GUYS SUMMER’S ALMOST HERE OH YEEEEEEAAAH
NO. NO NO WHO LET THE SNOWMAN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.
Much better. Now that it’s almost summer, let me introduce you to one of my favorite free summer-themed otome games: My Sunshine!
So you play Alice, a girl who has reunited with her BFF Alexis in Sunshine Harbor. You don’t even have time to put your suitcase down when your friend drops this bombshell: you have 30 days to find and bring a date to an end-of-the-summer costume party Alexis is throwing.
Then your friend just ditches you. I’M SO GLAD OUR FRIENDSHIP MEANS SO MUCH TO HER.
So how do you get a date in this little villa by the sea? Each day you have a certain amount of HP that you spend by interacting with the other characters (talking, dating), working to earn money to buy items for yourself and the guy you’re wooing, or on grinding charm, intelligence, or beauty skill points. There are three guys you can date: Leon, Damien, and Tom. You need to earn 20 skill points of the skill your specific guy admires and at least 400 experience points (EXP) to get the guy to date you.
There is some varied choice when it comes to grinding skill points and EXP. Talking to the guy and answering the way that he agrees with is 10 points, giving him gifts (such as his favorite flavor of frozen yogurt or fish for that new book he’s been wanting) is 20 points, and dating is 50 points. You earn money by playing a mini-game at the boutique, the yogurt shop, or the book store, and you can get more HP by buying teddy bears and squeezing their heads off (don’t question the logic. Every night you sleep gives you 60 HP, and you only have 30 days, so plan wisely! At 600 points the guy asks you out to the costume party and asks you to dress in a certain costume.
Once you get a hang of things you can strategize how you can date all the boys at once, or just reach friendships, none at all, etc. There’s several different endings, although they’re not all too terribly different since it all ends at the costume party.
Speaking of which, I should probably get to dating. Who should I pick first, frenemy (ugh) Ranya?
Cute kitties with cute guys? C’mon, now, how is that not hot?
So you go down to the pier to meet Tom, who is a selfless young man that feeds twenty stray cats a day with his pitiful allowance, and his kitten DB.
Hey, man it’s better than drugs.
Have I mentioned how hilarious some of these obviously wrong answers are? However, what would make this game better is if the guy’s positive and negative reactions to your answers were unique to their specific answers.
I do like how Tom’s cat, DB makes the same facial expressions as his owner. It’s adorable.
Aww, that’s sweet, though to be honest it’s because I’ve been fishing all day to grind my EXP points and I probably smell like a cat version of Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles.
And now we’ve taken a nose dive from Adorable But Awkward Cat Guy to Creepy Cat Guy and I’m starting to see where Ranya’s coming from. I ask this guy out and he takes me for a date on the beach. Romantic, right? Oh yeah it is, until you see that he’s brought his cat along with him.
I’m starting to see why he’s had trouble keeping a girlfriend. He says that most girls can’t stand that he pays so much attention to cats and that they make him choose between the cats or the relationship, but I have a feeling that conversation went more like:
Girlfriend: Hey let’s go see Mad Max: Fury Road.
Tom: Ok I’ll bring the cat!
GF: You can’t bring a cat into a movie house. Leave the cat at home so we can go see a movie.
Tom: YOU CAN’T MAKE ME CHOOOOOOOSE!!!!11!
You…you don’t say now. Ha, what a coincidence, that.
Thankfully there are two other guys you can date. My favorite is the book worm and book store owner Damien, who took over the family business because reasons that make him grumpy pants:
You give him snarky answers until he finally takes the stick out of his ass and opens up about himself a bit more.
The other guy you date is Leon, who is Alexis’s older brother who’s the “rebel” of the group.
Leon’s calls you brat and other juvenile shit because he’s older, but once you get to know him he stops that real fast and is fairly decent. I just love how the two guys that are grumpy or not exactly the most welcoming in the beginning end up being really nice when you get to know and date them, but the one guy who’s openly friendly with you from the get-go becomes kind of creepy at the end. However, I did decide to take Tom as a date to Alexis’s party, so I guess I’ll dress up as Alice in Wonderland like he asked. I wonder what he’ll be dressed up as? Probably the Mad Hatter, and if he brings DB (which he probably will), maybe he’ll dress him up as the Chesire Cat.
Ok, what? “The look in your eyes that reminds me of a stray kitten,” what? There’s a thin line between being naturally protective of someone and infantilization, dude. Fuck this. I’m going with the guy who talked books with me and likes me for being independent and smart.
So that’s generally My Sunshine, which is a light and frothy free game that you can play between surfing and playing World of Warcraft. It’s not without it’s problems, but I still enjoyed playing it and laughing at the genuinely funny dialogue. It’s akin to reading fluff on the beach.
Any last words before we close out, Ranya?
WHAT WHAT, WHAT, WHAT?
